How to Password Protect a PDF File

Why Password Protect PDFs?

Password protection prevents unauthorized access to sensitive documents:

  • Financial statements — tax returns, bank statements
  • Legal documents — contracts, agreements, court filings
  • Medical records — health information, prescriptions
  • Business plans — strategies, projections, confidential data

  • Protect PDFs with PDFEdits

  • Go to Protect PDF
  • Upload your PDF
  • Enter your desired password
  • Click "Process & Download"
  • Share the protected PDF — recipients will need the password to open it

  • Password Tips

  • Use strong passwords — mix letters, numbers, symbols
  • Don't use the same password for every document
  • Share passwords separately — never send the password in the same email as the PDF
  • Keep a record — store passwords in a password manager

  • Need to Remove a Password?

If you have the password and want to remove protection:

  • Go to Unlock PDF
  • Upload the protected PDF
  • Enter the current password
  • Download the unprotected version

  • Related Security Tools

  • Add Signature — sign your documents
  • Bates Numbering — legal page numbering
  • Add Watermark — mark as confidential
  • Flatten PDF — lock form fields permanently
